The Coal Authority appoints ECS Engineering Services as a framework contractor
The Coal Authority has appointed ECS Engineering Services as a framework contractor for minor works including scheme refurbishments, liner replacements and access track works for the next four years. ECS will assist the Coal Authority in protecting the public and safeguarding the environment from historic mining issues.
Clark Williamson, Contracts Director at ECS, said: “We are delighted to be appointed by the Coal Authority for one of its key strategic frameworks. We have collaborated on a number of projects in the past, so we are well-placed as a business to provide the responsive electro-mechanical support they require. Our track record working with water control assets across the country, as well as our in-house design studios, fabrication facilities and highly qualified on-site teams, ensure we have the capacity and capability to deliver.”
The Coal Authority is a non-departmental public body and partner organisation of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The UK has a strong mining heritage, especially with regards to the industrial revolution. However, water passing through abandoned coal and metal mines can cause contamination of water courses, so the organisation is primarily focused on limiting the effects of mine water laden with metals on the water table.
Currently, the Coal Authority operates and maintains around 75 operational schemes, has responsibility for 70 flood alleviation subsidence pumping stations and 800 liability monitoring sites. The new framework is focused on leveraging a flexible supply chain to deliver new builds and refurbishments of existing assets with value added.
ECS Engineering Services is an appointed framework provider to government institutions, local authorities and private companies in the water control, construction and environmental sectors. The business has a proven track record working with the Coal Authority.
In 2018, ECS renewed and upgraded the pumps, motor control and electrical infrastructure at the ‘A’ Winning mine water treatment scheme near Chesterfield in Derbyshire. For over 20 years, ECS has maintained the pumps and treatment works that ensure water levels are effectively controlled at the National Coal Mining Museum. ECS also helped to seal Daw Mill Colliery Mineshaft with a custom fabricated cover in 2014.
